Hi there,

I am a British citizen living in Amsterdam. I am planning to get married to my long term partner in September and wanted to get some legal advice regarding marriage/partnership in the Netherlands.

1. Is it a good idea for us to draw up a contract regarding our assets/ future assets? We would like to have it so we keep our own assets and do no have the right at claiming each others assets now or in the future.
2. I will eventually apply for Dutch nationality, what would happen if we were to divorce? Could I be stripped of my passport?
3. Do you know if there is an overview of how things would change for us (legally) once married.

thanks for your help in advance.

all the best

In general, it is wise to go to a notary before the marriage to draw up a marriage agreement. You can then indicate exactly what your wishes are and you can also have your assets described. You may lose your Dutch nationality if you get divorced later. In view of Brexit, this will have consequences for your stay in the Netherlands.
