Division of household effects and legal tips | Legal advice centre

Questioner

I have a question about the division of household effects between me and my ex-girlfriend. My ex-girlfriend is claiming half the value of my car through her lawyer (5,000 euros), calculated on the basis of the ANWB website. I had an appraisal done at the Ford dealer and I came to an amount of 6782,- I would now like to send a letter with an offer of 3391,- My expectation is that my ex will not agree, but will still want to appropriate the car for that amount. The car that is registered in my name is mentioned in the cohabitation contract. I can prove that my ex never contributed to insurance and road tax. I paid for the car myself before the cohabitation contract was drawn up. I would like to get your advice and know what rights I have if this becomes a lawsuit. I want to postpone legal costs for as long as possible.

Lawyer

In order to properly assess your legal position, you should preferably have the entire text of the cohabitation contract assessed. By the way, if your ex believes that the car is worth €10,000 and she is entitled to half of this, you can also suggest that she take the car from you, in return for payment to you of €5,000.
