My parents are from Morocco. I have lived in the Netherlands continuously from my first year until today, when I was 25. Because my parents are from Morocco, I automatically received Moroccan nationality. Today I tried to apply for my Dutch nationality at the municipality. However, that did not work. I do not qualify for Dutch citizenship for either the application by means of 'option' or 'naturalization'. Not for option, because according to the lady at the counter I must have been born here and never have been away. I meet both requirements, but because my parents had separated in 1996, I went to live with my grandmother with my mother, who also lived in the Netherlands. However, I was not registered at the time. It is a bit more complicated, but what it comes down to is that I did not have a valid residence address in the Netherlands for a year, but I did live in the Netherlands. In 2016, approximately the same thing happened. I also did not have a valid residence address for a few months, because I simply did not have a permanent place of residence and slept here and there. According to the lady at the counter, the latter was also the reason why I do not qualify for naturalization. For that, I have to be registered for 10 years, of which the last 2 years uninterrupted. So I do not meet that requirement. Now I just feel Dutch. I was born here, I grew up here, I study here, I have lived here my entire life without interruption, the only thing I do not have is nationality. And because I did not have a valid address here for a year and a few months, I am not able to obtain Dutch nationality. Even my mother, who was not born here and did not grow up here, now has Dutch nationality.
