We've contacted our insurance company again, and they've inspected it and concluded it was a construction defect. They overlooked this last time. We'll be paying for the repairs ourselves.\n \nNow our question is, what can we do about this? Is this something we can hold the previous owners liable for? However, the seller may have guaranteed in the supplementary questionnaire that the extension was sound and there were no known leaks. In the latter case, this constitutes a mistake, and you could recover the costs, or part of them, from the seller. The contractor may be held liable in turn, but they have no direct relationship with you.
