Is it possible to claim back an advance payment from a tiler?

Questioner

I communicated with a tiler (one-man company) via WhatsApp. He was going to do the job, laying a tiled floor, for me. When exchanging information, about the type of tile, the exact date and other details, I found his way of communicating and customer focus so substandard that I no longer had confidence in letting him do the job. I asked him to cancel the job and to refund me the advance payment of 450 euros (which I had paid quite quickly) within three days. Is this possible in this way? Part of the money, half, consists of the cost of the tiles he was going to order for me. I have no idea if he actually did that, he certainly didn't mention it.

What is important is what you exactly agreed. Could you terminate the agreement? Was that agreed? Legally, you can terminate if the other party does not comply and not even after it has been summoned to comply (correctly) within a reasonable period. The question is whether poor customer orientation or a bad way of communicating can be considered as non-compliance (breach of contract) of the agreement.
