Money back options when selling a car privately?

Questioner

On November 8, I bought a car from a private individual. On Saturday, November 19, I unfortunately had problems with the engine. Today, my garage determined that the engine had to be completely replaced because it no longer works. I paid 1,300 for the car. For the repair now with a new engine, I would have to pay 1,500. This is more than my car cost. When I bought it, we took it for a test drive and there seemed to be nothing wrong. However, the problems with the engine must have existed before I bought it. What is the best way to arrange this with the seller? Can I still claim money back? I have not used the car intensively in the few days that I have had it. I have not even driven an empty tank.

Lawyer

Good morning, In principle, there is a mistake. You bought the car with the intention of driving it on public roads. This is now impossible due to technical defects. You should address the seller on the grounds of mistake, with the request to refund the amount. If you would like help with this procedure, please feel free to contact us without obligation (tel. 0649175526). Kind regards, Silvienne Leito FerLei Legal
