Authority over child?

Questioner

My partner and I recently broke up, but my ex made a request to me. He would like to have 1 child registered with him, if 1 child is registered with my ex, do I lose custody of 1 child who is registered with my ex?

Lawyer

Registering a child at one parent's address does not automatically mean that the other parent loses parental authority. Parental authority is the right and duty of parents to care for their child and to make decisions about upbringing and care. This authority can only be revoked by a court order. Registering a child at a different address can have consequences for the exercise of parental authority. If parents disagree about where a child should live, the judge can decide that the child will live with one parent and that the other parent will retain parental authority. This can have consequences for how often the other parent will see the child and how much influence he or she will have on the child's upbringing. If you are concerned about the implications of registering your child at your ex's address, I recommend that you consult a lawyer who can help you evaluate the situation and advise you on your rights and obligations.
