Staying at home if a partner dies?

Questioner

I live with my boyfriend. There is a big financial difference between us. My boyfriend is rich, but I am financially independent of him. The house we live in is completely his property and is in his name. We do not have a cohabitation contract and are not financial partners. When we started living together, I asked my boyfriend to arrange for me that, if he were to die, I - and our animals - would not be on the street immediately. This would have to be arranged in his will and he agreed to this. He does not have a will and his parents are his heirs. He is an avid tour and freestyle skier and prefers to ski off-piste, at least 3 times a year. In December 2019, I registered with the municipality where we live. To date, he has not arranged anything. We have put something on paper that he signed, but it has not been to the notary. I have now said that I want a rental contract, because as a tenant I would have even more rights than I have now, but he does not like that either. It is not clear to me why he does not arrange it. I have explicitly told him that it is not about his money, but about the right to reside in this house for at least 2 years after something unexpected could happen, so that I can also find shelter for the animals, since we live on a large plot and then I move back to my apartment (I will keep this). Can I, for example, derive rights from my registration with the municipality at this address?

Lawyer

In general, registering at an address with the municipality does not provide automatic rights to the ownership or property rights of a home. Registration at an address is mainly intended for administrative purposes, such as establishing your place of residence for tax purposes or obtaining certain social benefits. The fact that the house you live in is fully owned by your boyfriend and is in his name may mean that his parents automatically become the heirs according to the law. However, a will can affect the distribution of the estate. I would advise you to go to a notary office with your friend and have everything legally recorded as soon as possible.
