How long are I stuck with a verbal agreement for a television subscription?

Questioner

At the request of my computer support person, with whom I have a monthly subscription, I had my television subscription run through him. In hindsight, I am not satisfied with this and would like to become a direct customer of Z again. Can I cancel my subscription through him after a year? He says I have to run things through him for two years. His request to run things through him was made verbally by him. I did not sign any agreement nor did I receive any from him.

You also have a number of rights under Dutch consumer law. For example, if you were not explicitly informed about the duration of the agreement or the conditions for termination, these conditions may be considered unreasonable. If you feel you have a dispute with your provider over the terms of your agreement, you may want to consider filing a complaint with the Telecommunications Services Disputes Committee or the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets. Both bodies can handle disputes over telecommunications contracts and have the power to make binding decisions. Another possible step is to seek the help of a consumer organisation, such as the Consumers' Association, which can provide advice and support in disputes with companies. Ultimately, however, the best step is to seek the services of a legal advisor to ensure that you fully understand your rights and how best to defend them. Remember that this is general advice and the factual details of your situation can make a difference.
