Termination of lease: What to do with a one-year contract?

Good afternoon. I have a question regarding lease termination. My husband and I signed a lease that states it's a one-year contract (signed in September 2012). We love living in the house, but unfortunately we have to move to family due to private circumstances. Now that I want to cancel the rent, I am told that I have to continue paying for six months, because it runs until September. My question is, is this allowed? Even if circumstances make it unavoidable? I can't afford it financially anyway... Thank you in advance, L.

Unfortunately, I don't have good news for you. A minimum-term contract is permitted. You therefore have few options other than trying to reach an agreement with the landlord regarding a buyout or replacement. The landlord is not obligated to cooperate in this matter.
