What If You Are Placed Under Guardianship?
Questioner
My mother wants to put me under guardianship because I moved in with someone. Is that even possible? I'm 19 and moved in with my boyfriend last year. My mother can't stand it and has been blackmailing me for a whole year with all sorts of things. First, she tried to talk about my education, saying she would pay for it if I moved back in, otherwise not. Then she smeared my in-laws and my boyfriend, and she's still doing it. She's found something new and calls my boyfriend a "loverboy," which isn't true, as several people can confirm. She's also threatening to put me under guardianship if I don't come over for a weekend to talk, alone without my boyfriend, and I don't want that. If she wants to talk, she has to do it with my boyfriend. She also says that if we talked, she might pay for my education. She's driving me crazy. I've tried to interact with her normally, but she keeps blackmailing and smearing me. What can my mother do to me? Of course, I want to continue living with my boyfriend. Can she put me under guardianship? And what can I do?Questioner
You can't simply be placed under guardianship. There are requirements. Furthermore, you must have a well-substantiated reason for guardianship (wastefulness, mental illness, or alcohol abuse). If your mother does submit a request, you will also be invited to a hearing. If your mother continues this, you can send her a letter urging her to stop. If she continues to harass you, you can consider filing a complaint of libel/slander or requesting a restraining order.Questioner
