PhD in Ireland: What does this mean for your health insurance?
Questioner
At the moment I am planning to pursue a PhD in Ireland for the next 4 years, for which I would receive a monthly tax-free allowance. So I would have student status in Ireland and receive a scholarship, so I have no income. But how does this apply in a Dutch system, where a PhD student is an employee and receives a salary? Maw Am I still obliged to maintain my basic health insurance (as a 'student') or do I have an 'income' and am I therefore obliged to arrange my health insurance here? The same applies to the AOW that I would not build up because I 'work' or study abroad and the deregistration in the Netherlands. (I won't be 30 in the next 4 years) Thanks in advance for your advice on this.Lawyer
You will no longer live, work or study in the Netherlands and therefore you are no longer required to be insured in the Netherlands. The AOW will be reduced by 2% each year.Take the next step
