Hello, I am a 15 year old girl and I am in love with a 39 year old man. Should I, as a 16 year old, be allowed to have a relationship with him without my mother's permission? I already know that you can have sexual contact if both people want it when you are 16. but does this also apply to a relationship? hoping for answers. thank you xxx

Sexual contact with a minor (under 18) is punishable in the Netherlands. Up to the age of 18, parents can limit or prohibit unwanted relationships because they exercise parental authority up to the age of 18.

Consensual sexual acts with minors who are sixteen years or older are not prohibited by law in principle. However, some acts are explicitly prohibited, which also significantly restricts the possibility of having indecent acts/sex with minors aged 16 or 17. In any case, it is not advisable for a 39-year-old to have sexual contact with a minor because the legal restriction puts him at great risk of being prosecuted.
