Question about student debt and emigration? Read more!

Questioner

I am going to quit my studies, and then I am stuck with a debt. I am going to emigrate to Turkey, and I am not planning to pay my duo debt, can the duo/government do something to me in Turkey?

Lawyer

Of course you will have to repay your debt, even if you live in Turkey! You must report your new address to DUO. If you do not pay, DUO will call in an international debt collection agency. However, you can choose to stop repaying your student loan for a total of up to five years (sixty months). The interest on your debt will continue to accrue. This could therefore be bad for you. In addition, the maximum repayment period will be extended by the number of months that you temporarily do not repay. In some situations your debt can be forgiven. More information about this can be found at http://www.duo.nl.
