Registering a license plate in your name in the Netherlands - Legal Aid

Questioner

Ir/Madam, I wanted to register a license plate in my name last week, but that turned out not to be possible. I found out that it probably has to do with my GBA, because I am not registered in the Netherlands and am listed as 'destination unknown'. I would like to ask you what else I can do besides registering with a municipality. That is not possible at the moment. Nevertheless, I would like to register my car and therefore license plate in my name. Kind regards, D

You can only register a car in your name if you have a residential address here in the Netherlands in connection with registration with the RDW and the tax authorities. Is this not possible to register. In addition, if that would not be possible and you would drive with an unregistered car, you could get into serious trouble if you are pulled over. Then you will lose your car. So my advice is to register yourself in a municipality where you live. That is the only way to be able to drive legally.

Questioner

Thanks for the response, so a postal address is not an option either? Kind regards, d

Lawyer

No. You must have a permanent residence in the Netherlands so that the RDW and Tax Authorities can link the car to that address. This is due to fraud.

Questioner

If the vehicle is suspended, will it still be registered in your name? Kind regards
