Changing your surname: information and advice

Questioner

Hello, I hope you can help me I have my father's last name, I am 24 years old and have a daughter of 3 who also has my last name he has done all sorts of things to me, he was removed from parental care when I was 12, when I was 6, my parents were divorced, my mother passed away, but I want her last name to leave everything behind, that is important to me, what can I do, who can help me, and do I have valid reasons? I have read everywhere, but I find it rather unclear. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my question

Yes, I think so. I think you can successfully request a surname change on these grounds.

You can request a surname change if your parents separated when you were a minor and you continued to live with your mother after the divorce. This ground probably applies in your case. If you cannot obtain a name change on these grounds, there is another hardship clause: it must be demonstrated that not changing the surname would seriously harm your (mental) health. You need a statement from an expert for this.

You can read on the following website what the requirements are for changing your surname, how to do this and what the costs are. https://www.justis.nl/producten/naams Change/achternaam-wachtigen/#paragraph1
