Contract extension: What to do if you don't hear anything?
Questioner
My six-month contract expires in just over 2 weeks, I haven't heard anything yet whether or not it will be extended. I understand that I have to work there for 5 weeks for a job, which overlaps the end of my six-month contract. How exactly does it work? Will I get a conversation (evolution or performance review) or if you don't hear anything, is it okay, or do I have to ask myself whether or not it will be extended? I understand that they can indicate on the day itself that it expires that it will not be extended. I also read that it is decent to indicate about 4 weeks in advance that you can start looking for another job. Thanks in advance.Lawyer
There is no legal obligation for an employer to indicate in advance whether a fixed-term employment contract will be extended. This can be agreed contractually. Only if your employment contract stipulates that it must be terminated in advance, you can assume an extension in the absence of timely termination. An extension also occurs if your employer allows you to continue working after the employment contract has expired. The fixed-term employment contract is then continued for the same period under the same conditions pursuant to Article 7:668 of the Dutch Civil Code.Take the next step
