Cancel fitness center subscription on medical advice

My son-in-law has an annual membership at a fitness center. As it turns out, it is medically irresponsible to continue with it, as it causes more problems than it does good. Is there a possibility to stop such a membership in the meantime on medical advice? The center itself is very vague about this.
