Washing Machine Rental Law: Who Pays?

Dear, According to my lease, I rent the washing machine that is present in the house. I share this washing machine with three other housemates and it is in the common area. In the contract for all of us it is stated that we rent the washing machine. Now the washing machine is broken and the landlord suddenly says that the machine was bought by previous residents and that we have to provide a new one. I assume this is not correct? When we buy a new washing machine we pay for the purchase and then we pay rent on it. Am I right in thinking that the landlord is responsible for the washing machine and not us?
