Cancellation period for gym membership: What to know?

Questioner

I train at a gym and now want to cancel my membership. There is a 1-month notice period. For example, if I do this today, do I have to pay until April 20 (30 days) or until April 30 (calendar month)? How is 'month' interpreted in this case?

Lawyer

With a notice period of one month, in principle a calendar month is meant. This means that you still have to pay contributions in the month in which you cancel and the following month. You may of course continue to use the accommodations during this period.

Questioner

I read in an explanation of Dam's law that a month means a maximum of 30/31 days. Is this not correct?

Lawyer

Yes, that is a calendar month. So if an agreement states that there is a notice period of a calendar month, it depends on how many days the month has (31/30 or 28) this is then the period that applies as a notice period. If you cancel on March 20, the term starts from that moment, in practice this means that you still have to pay for the months of March and April. April 30 is then the last day, until that day you can continue to use the accommodations/services.
