Cancelling an annual sports club subscription: tips & rules

I have taken out an annual subscription with a sports club, and the website states that membership can be 'cancelled in writing on a monthly basis', but the small print states that 'Cancellation must take place before the end of the month of the contract period'. Annual subscription Unlimited membership (cancellable monthly in writing!) My question is, can I cancel at any time now or do I have to wait until I have been a member for at least a year?
