Employee and Friday Work Obligation: What Are Your Rights?

Questioner

My husband has not worked on Fridays for a municipality for over 30 years. Because there was a rotation round, he is now at a different location and now the boss thinks he has to work on Fridays because of understaffing that day. I also have Fridays off and our social life is based on this. Can the employer force you to turn your life upside down and go to work on Fridays? I would like to hear your response, thank you in advance!

Lawyer

If this custom has become a condition of employment, your husband can keep Fridays off. I think 30 years is a long time. However, this acquired right is not described in an employment contract or collective labor agreement. You run the risk that only a judge can make a final decision on this matter.
