Rental disputes: Support with deposits and rental contracts

I have settled the last month's rent with the deposit of my student room. I did this after the landlord indicated that he would settle costs with this that do not apply to me. Now I have a collection agency after me who still wants to recover the money from me. Room looks neat and I have indicated to the landlord that I will pay for any defects but I want to protect my money for costs that do not apply to me. These are municipal taxes. How best to deal with this?

Municipal user portion levies can be charged in the rent. Offsetting with the deposit is usually not allowed but is a wise move. I often see that the deposit is not returned. In your case, you should consult your rental contract to see which costs are or are not included in the rent.
