Legal Advice for Speeding Fines in Hawaii

Questioner

Dear, I went on vacation to Hawaii last month. During this holiday I received a speeding ticket for exceeding the permitted speed. The officer who stopped me had measured a speed of 81 mph using radar while driving on the other side. Up to and including 80 mph a ticket is immediately issued and must be paid on the spot. Because my measured speed is above that I must appear in court. I told the officer that I would be back in the Netherlands at the time of the hearing. On his advice, I went to a courthouse. However, the lady in the locket told me that this could not be resolved immediately, but that I had to write a letter (waiver of physical presence) as soon as I was in the Netherlands, stating that I was back in the Netherlands and could not be present at the hearing. Can I send this letter without serious consequences? Or can someone give me another advice.

Lawyer

Dear questioner, The law differs from country to country, as the country does, so the best thing to do is to have a local person assist you and guide you through the specific procedures. Out of curiosity I took a look, it works a little differently there. https://www.dmv.org/hi-hawaii/fighting-your-traffic-ticket.php https://www.berniesez.com/speeding-tickets-in-hawaii-what-to-know/ In any case, a timely response is important, and a 'not guilty' could be important, especially if it is reckless driving. As I understand it, it can also help to contact the court and tell them offer to take an additional 'defensive driving' course. Interesting subject for me but a lot of hassle for you. I wish you strength.
