Security for your webshop: Protection against hacks

We have a small webshop with two of us (colleague and I), now I understand from an IT person that there are many hackers active and especially hack domain names with an open source. Our domain (wordpress) falls under this. This IT person tells me that the webshop is responsible when customer data is hacked/taken and the damage that results from that. 1. Is this correct? 2. What can/should a small webshop (little capital) do about this?

Considering your domain name 'wordpress' this could already cause problems because you are using a trade name that is already provided by another company. Also in view of the new General Data Protection Regulation legislation, you are responsible for the data leak of your collected data from third parties.
