Legal assistance with autism and conflicts
Questioner
Our 24 year old son with an autistic disorder still lives at home. This increasingly results in conflicts and threats. The police have been to the house several times for this. He refuses treatment/guidance. What legal options do we have to 'demand' that he seeks guidance/treatment? Can we put him 'on the street'? Of course we want the best for our son but we (and our other children) are reaching our limits.Lawyer
If good conversations with your son, with or without others, do not lead to a solution, then, given your son's disorder, conflicts and threats are not a reason to have your son forcibly treated or admitted to the ICU. Unfortunately, you cannot demand that he undergo guidance and/or treatment. You can demand that he find his own place to live and that you put him 'on the street' if he does not seek treatment. In that sense you can perhaps demand that. It is not nice to tell a child this in this way but your situation and the situation of the other children can certainly be a reason for it. Given the conflicts and threats, I advise you, if you wish, to tell him this in the presence of a third party - for example the local police officer (in plain clothes).Take the next step
