Liable for Traffic Sign Theft?

I am being held liable for the theft of a traffic sign, which came loose from a pole as a result of a collision. I had a collision with a pole. As a result, the sign came loose. I put the sign along the side of the road. A few hours later, others still saw that sign. Apparently, the sign was stolen after that. Of course, I report myself properly to settle the damage I caused and I am told that I also have to pay for the sign. In my opinion, I am not at all to blame for the sign being stolen. Someone decided to steal that sign at a completely different time than the collision itself. I hope that someone can advise me on whether or not to pay the entire bill.
