Legal Aid Clinic: Liability in Sports School

Recently, I accidentally partially broke a large mirror while putting a dumbbell back in a gym. The spot school says they are not insured for this and want to charge me for the costs. I do not have liability insurance. Isn't the gym required to have insurance? And what do you advise me to do? Thanks in advance.

If it was indeed an accident, I would maintain to the gym that there was no intent or gross negligence and that this is the gym's risk. This is certainly true if the dumbbell rack was placed in front of a mirror.
