Pets in rental properties: What are your rights?

Questioner

I currently live in a house owned by a landlord with 2 other people. I have been living here since July.I would like to adopt a cat to help with my mental health in my day to day life. In my contract it doesn't say I am not allowed to have an animal however when I asked the landlord he said I could not have a cat. He never comes to check on the house. Can I get a cat?does he have grounds to evict me? And is there a certificate in the Netherlands to show that an animal is used for emotional support but is not trained?

Lawyer

If there is not a legal statement in your rental agreement saying it is forbidden to have pets in the house, you are entitled to have one. I have to study your agreement first including all terms and conditions.
