Labor dispute: Can your employer demand what you wear?

Questioner

I work in a bakery and wear a headband in my hair. Now my boss thinks that tip is ugly and I am not allowed to wear it anymore. Can she demand that?

Lawyer

No, the employer may only demand this when it is unhygienic and/or dangerous. I don't think that would be the case with a hairband in a bakery. Wearing or not wearing it can lead to a labor conflict. That is not in your interest. Can't you have a good conversation with the employer at a quiet moment and look for a solution? If you have any further questions/problems, I advise you to contact a specialized employment law attorney.

Questioner

Thanks for the response. No, I won't wear it anymore. I just wanted to know if I am within my rights.
