Foreign health insurance: What you need to know

As a Dutch citizen, can I have a foreign health insurance policy with worldwide coverage under the Administrative Law Act?

For example, if you are going on a trip to a non-EU country for more than a year, you must terminate your Dutch health insurance and you can take out a foreign health insurance. This also applies if you will be working outside the EU for more than 3 months. If in doubt, contact the SVB.

If you no longer live in the Netherlands (regardless of EU or outside the EU and longer than 8 months out of the Netherlands) you may have an expat insurance. If you live or work in the Netherlands, you are required to insure yourself with a Dutch health insurer.
