Guardianship and mentorship for your child

Questioner

Our son is autistic and mentally handicapped (IQ of 20) will be 18 in October. Now we would like to give a power of attorney (or something like that) or guardianship to his sister. Because we both (the parents) are also getting on in years, we would like to have everything arranged for the future. So our question is, who should we contact to arrange something like this? And under what heading does this fall?

Lawyer

You can submit a request to the subdistrict court yourself for protective guardianship for your son. You then ask whether your daughter, if she so wishes, can be appointed guardian. Please note that guardianship concerns financial matters. If decisions have to be made in the future about (medical) treatments etc., you can simultaneously apply for mentorship. For a great deal of information about this, see www.rechtspraak.nl. You can click through directly on the home page. NB: there are also professional guardians, but that is not necessary.
