Legal advice on dismissal and employment rights
Questioner
I have indicated to my employer that I see no future in my current position and want to look for something else. I currently have a permanent contract and do not want to resign until I have found another position and am also motivated to continue working in my current position until then. Now my employer is asking me to submit a letter of resignation with an end date of October 1, 2019. Are they allowed to ask this, as long as I have not officially resigned yet? They say that they would like to have something on paper, but I am afraid that if I submit this I will be stuck with this date and I will be on the street on October 1, even if I have not found anything else yet.Lawyer
In principle, they may ask this of you, but it is inappropriate and does not demonstrate good employership. You would be wise not to comply. In doing so, you run the risk of being fired without having found something else. Only resign when you have found something else. An explicit letter of resignation is not necessary.
