Asbestos When Buying a House: What to Do?

Questioner

Good morning, I have a question about asbestos. I'm buying a house that contains asbestos. The seller (a housing association) commissioned an asbestos survey, which shows where the asbestos is located. They haven't removed it. They're leaving that up to me, the prospective new owner. I've now had a structural survey done, and this gentleman told me that the seller is obligated to deliver the house to me asbestos-free. Is this correct?

Questioner

This concerns the agreements with the seller. The seller's obligation is to disclose this. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Questioner

The seller is not obligated to deliver the property asbestos-free, but they are obligated to report it. Unfortunately, the buyer is responsible for determining the type of asbestos and its location, unless otherwise agreed between the parties. A single notification of asbestos by the seller is usually sufficient. Should a legal dispute nevertheless arise, please contact us.
