That's not prohibited per se, but the question is, what's the purpose? If the employer tries to obtain information about you this way, I find it very improper and perhaps even contrary to good employer practices. If you call in sick and the employer wants to inquire about your well-being, it's advisable for them to call you directly, not family members. You could tell your family members that they're not obligated to provide information to your employer and that they should refer you to them.
