Good morning, My question concerns a long, drawn-out divorce. We have a complex situation (two houses, one of which is rented) and are using a mediator. My ex-partner has threatened to end the mediation and hire his own lawyer. I personally want to prevent this escalation, but I'm constantly confronted with unreasonable demands. I recently made a substantial concession to her regarding the division of the value of the rented house, but now there's another unreasonable demand regarding an extension of the alimony obligation (to 15 years), even though neither of us (currently nor in the foreseeable future) is entitled to alimony. Furthermore, she has practically emptied the joint savings account. I'd like to have my half of that amount included as a claim in the deed of division, but it would be best if the money were simply refunded, so that the division proceeds as agreed after the agreement is signed. How can I ensure harmony is restored? How can I "make a fist" here and stand up for myself without it escalating? Thank you in advance for your response.Questioner
A legal battle leads to a legal answer, and in that case, it's indeed better to hire two separate advisors because this must be handled professionally and legally. If there are children involved, you must prevent the matter from being played on their backs. Unfortunately, that happens often.Take the next step
