Inheritance tax and IOAW: What are your rights?
Questioner
Dear reader, I am 65 years old and receive an IOAW benefit. My very elderly mother could die at any moment. What are my rights and obligations if I receive an inheritance? Can I accept it, or will I be reduced, or will I lose all or part of it? I will retire on March 27, 2021. I don't want problems but I want deal with this wisely and honestly.Questioner
Good day, Your assets (any inheritance) have no influence on the amount of your IOAW benefit.Questioner
Won't the benefits be stopped then? In other words, will they first consume the inheritance under supervision, and then apply for benefits again? I'm very cautious... enough misery and unrest. experienced!Questioner
Thank you very much for your response but.. I'm afraid they'll stop my benefits and I'll have to use up my inheritance first under supervision. Then apply for benefits again.Questioner
Your assets (including savings from an inheritance) are not taken into account when assessing your eligibility for this benefit. This is the key difference from benefits under the Participation Act, where you must first use up a certain amount of your own assets. I hope this reassures you. You can, of course, always inquire with your municipality.Take the next step
