Liability After the Job: What to Do?
Questioner
I did a roofing job for a client a year and a half to two years ago, back when I was still running my own business as a freelancer. Now the client has a leaky roof and wants to hold me liable for the costs involved. He wants me to fix it myself or hire someone else. I terminated my contract in October 2019 and am now employed by a different company. Am I still liable for the damage the client claims I sustained? From the very first phone call I received from him, he started using threatening language.Questioner
Terminating your business does not, in itself, release you from responsibility for the work you performed. If the leak resulted from your work, you will still be responsible for resolving it or paying for the repair.Questioner
Is the leak the result of your work? What do your terms and conditions state? Is there a defect related to your work? Or is it a new leak? Two years is quite a long time and I wouldn't simply agree to it.Take the next step
