Arranging guardianship: What do you need to know?

Questioner

Good afternoon, I have a question about guardianship. My husband and I have had a son for a year now. Now we have a note with our signatures on it that says where he will go if anything happens to either of us. Is this sufficient? Or do we need to have it notarized?

You can easily have this recorded in the Guardianship Register maintained by the court. There, you can designate which person you would like to become the guardian of your son in the event of your death. Should you both die, the person you designated as guardian will still have to formally accept the guardianship. You can also make this designation in the Guardianship Register digitally. Please visit rechtspraak.nl for more information. This designation is free of charge and legally binding.
