I would like to have the rental agreement adjusted for another co-tenant

For the past 5 years I have rented an apartment with a good friend. He left in December and my cousin came to live with me. I would like to amend the contract so that the first friend is removed from the contract and my cousin is added. According to the landlord this is not possible. We have been given two options: 1. the contract will continue in my name and my cousin can sublet. 2. We will receive a new contract for the current market rent. Are these indeed the only options, or are there other options in this case? Thank you in advance!
