What is the best way to contact my previous landlord?
Questioner
I recently moved to another room in March. Before that I had contact with my former landlord about when the deposit would be refunded, because I could not find anything about that in the contract, only about what they still had to do (calculations etc.). Then she messaged me with, and I quote; 'Don't forget that you have to cancel the rent at the end of the month for next month. For example, you want to move in May. Then you cancel the rent at the end of April by email or letter. Ok.'. This is different from the contract, but because she told me this herself, I emailed her on March 8th my cancellation for April 1st, because I wanted to do it before the end of the month (as she said I had to do). On March 10th she emailed me with her response in which she said that I had done it wrong and that I (if the new resident could not move in by April 1st) had to continue paying her until April 8th. I thought this was fine, even though she herself had misinformed me. Recently, the new resident only heard from the current residents on March 31st that she would get the room, while I have proof that I had given them the opportunity much earlier (March 11th) to arrange this in time, but they kept postponing and guaranteed me several times that they would do it in time. The new resident had called the landlord and was then told by her that I had to continue paying until May, and that she had to discuss this with me. So I had to hear this from her, despite the fact that the landlord had spoken to me several times about other matters. Since she misinformed me and said herself that I had to pay until April 8th instead of the entire month of May, I do not agree with this and I want to approach her in the best and most efficient way, especially because I am not the first person to have problems with her after leaving and to keep getting other reasons to pay her that do not make sense. I have also had contact several times with former tenants of hers who subsequently did not receive their deposit back on time, etc. I hope someone can help me with this because I have the feeling that the fact that I am a student and have no knowledge of this is being taken advantage of.Lawyer
You did not indicate the end of the lease in time (if you want to cancel as of April 1, you must send that letter before March 1. It is possible that the landlord has been negligent, but she is also not applying the scheme properly and it is possible that she is now receiving double rent. Otherwise, please contact us.Take the next step
