Why pay child support to ex-partner

Court hearing ex did not claim child support. No contribution was determined either. 2 Children aged 17 live with ex. Ex remarried. Jan. 2021 ex passed away and children live with his current wife because she is the sole guardian in the will. She is responsible for care and upbringing. Now his current wife is demanding child support from me. Is this possible? Never heard of an ex's partner demanding child support.Lawyer
