Double insured after returning from abroad

Questioner

Good afternoon, On June 2, 2021, I returned to the Netherlands after living abroad for several years. Once here, I registered and selected a health insurance policy. Since the latter is not such a simple process, it took several weeks before I decided which one I wanted. I then had to cancel my old (international) insurance with Cigna Global. This would take a week. As of July 13, my old insurance could be canceled and I started my new basic insurance. Now my basic insurance wants to withhold my premium retroactively from the period that I settled in the Netherlands again. I said that I did not want this, because I was already insured, but they are obliged to do so, she said. What can I do about this situation? I am very angry about it, mainly because I am in a very tight financial situation at the moment, but also because it is completely illogical to pay an insurance premium twice for a period that has already passed. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely,

It is understandable that you are angry, but what the insurer tells you is correct: you are liable to pay premiums as soon as you live or work in the Netherlands again.

You can still check whether the first insurer in question will pay you back the undue premiums and under what condition(s). See their general terms and conditions/term & conditions.
