Do I have to agree to an addendum in an employment contract?

Questioner

I work in a supermarket as a counter clerk. In July my boss asked me during my break if I wanted to work more hours, I indicated that I wanted to, I hadn't really thought about it. I have a 13-24 hour contract that runs until September. I received an addendum to my contract to work 32 hours in August and September. I signed it. After that my contract expired and I received an indefinite contract for 13-24 hours. Now I have received an addendum again to work 32 hours, can I refuse this and just keep the 13-24 hours? I found the 32 hours very stressful and was happy to go back to 13-24 hours.

It is in the interest of your employer and yourself that you both agree on your work schedule and times. Your employer has no use for an employee who indicates that she cannot cope with the extra hours she has been given. A sensible employer listens to her employees. I would advise you to talk to your boss about this calmly and indicate that you want to leave it as it is when he/she starts talking about the hours. Take that conversation as a starting point and confirm this later to your employer by registered mail and substantiate why you want this.
