My lawyer suddenly charges a higher hourly rate

Questioner

In order to properly settle a complicated inheritance in Turkey, I hired a lawyer in 2017. During the first meeting, we agreed on an hourly rate of €100.00. This hourly rate was used until the last invoice, but with the last invoice, €150.00 was suddenly used. Is this allowed just like that, without consultation?

Lawyer

Very simple: no, this is not allowed. After all, you have agreed on an hourly rate with the lawyer. If all is well, the agreements with your lawyer are in writing. You can ask the lawyer why a higher hourly rate is suddenly being charged. It may be a misunderstanding.

Questioner

Dear Mr. Penning, Thank you for your answer, here is the continuation: Just spoke to the lawyer and he is of the opinion that stating €150 on the specification/invoice is sufficient to implement a rate change. I am of the opinion and have told him that he must first inform me in writing of his intention so that I can decide whether or not to agree to this. This is not the way it should be? For me it is as clear as day but the lawyer will give his opinion on Monday.... Do you have any advice for me? Many thanks in advance!

Lawyer

Wait until he sends you his opinion on Monday. Let me know via a private message. Then I can take a look with you. Of course free of charge and without obligation.
