My accountant passed away suddenly

Questioner

My accountant passed away suddenly. He worked alone and had no partner. Now, as a self-employed person, I have no administration for the past 3 years and I am missing crucial tax returns. For the year 2019, I recently received a substantial decision to which I have filed an objection and presented the situation. I have also reported the situation to the Tax Authorities by telephone. Is there anything else I can do about this? In the meantime, the rental contract for my home runs until the end of this month, where I am urgently looking for a new home. I earn more than enough for offered (rental) homes, but they ask for my last 3 annual figures everywhere. Is there anything else I haven't thought of? How can I best solve this?

Perhaps your deceased accountant was a member of a professional association? You could then consult them to see if they have a solution. Perhaps another affiliated accountant can take over the assignment and/or you can get your bookkeeping back. You could also inquire with any surviving relatives. You should be able to collect your bookkeeping and store it elsewhere. You should indeed keep an eye on any objection and/or appeal periods and, if necessary, have an objection lodged on your behalf in a timely manner (by a new accountant or advisor).
