Is opaque glass necessary?

We recently had our kitchen renovated by a contractor, and for extra daylight they placed a window in our side wall. Next to our house there is a path for the back, then there is the property boundary with the neighbours which consists of a wire mesh, against which a hedera hedge grows on both sides. Because the houses (semi-detached houses) are very staggered, behind the hedge is our neighbours' driveway, where their cars are parked. Now our neighbours expect us to blind the window (make it opaque) because the window is 1.75 m away from the property boundary. Is this really necessary because a hedera hedge grows there and we have no view of the neighbours' plot?
