Fence against manorial hedge

Questioner

There is a shared hedge on the property line with our neighbours. It has been there for over 10 years and was planted by the neighbours with our consent. Now we want to prune the hedge (narrow it) and place a dense fence against it on our land. The fence will be about 8 cm from the property line and the hedge will not die because of this. Are we required to inform our neighbours about this in advance? If so, how far in advance? Do the neighbours have the right to stop our plan?

Stronger than what you state: you may ultimately demand from your neighbours that they cooperate and pay for the construction of a (sustainable) communal dividing wall on the property boundary, and thus demand that the hedge must make way. In that knowledge you are stronger, if necessary I can make both positions clear to your neighbours. Will you contact me for that?

To answer your other questions: no, you do not have to inform your neighbours if you are going to place a fence on your own property if you can guarantee the health of the hedge.
