How do I get my belongings back from rented storage?

Questioner

A few years ago I had my belongings stored at a company that specialized in this. I also paid monthly rent for this for a period of time. Suddenly, without any notice, I stopped receiving invoices. I then contacted the (new) owner by telephone several times. He told me that there was nothing wrong and that he would “look into it”. I haven't heard anything more about it. Even after several emails (May 2020) that I sent, there was no response. I then contacted you in July 2021 and thus came into contact with Mr. Ferwerda. She then made a written request (“notice”) to the landlord to make it clear that I have a right to my belongings. The last response from the landlord in question was that “there was a misunderstanding” and that he wanted to be called. Mr Ferwerda indicated that she works by email and does not handle matters by telephone. From that moment on, September 2021, nothing more happened, due to illness of the undersigned. I recently contacted Mr. Ferwerda but she indicated that she had closed her business. You will understand that I do not want to leave it at that, as the value of the contents is significant both emotionally and financially. I want to pick up the case again. Can you help me with this?

Lawyer

I can well imagine that you would like to have your goods back. It is not simply possible for a company to remove/destroy goods of another if you have an agreement with them. In this case, there are also takeovers of a company involved. Do you know if the contents are still stored at the company/what happened to the items? Without more information it is not possible for me to advise on possible next steps. You can contact me without obligation via my profile to discuss the matter.
