Poorly placed/finished door?

Questioner

On February 16th we signed for a door, threshold and frames. Asking price 6000,-. The same day we wanted to get rid of it. We thought it was too expensive. This was not possible or we had to pay 50% cancellation costs. The next day we were able to 'strip down' the door somewhat to 5000,-. (cheaper door trade, only color on the outside, etc.). On July 12th the door with frames and soapstone was placed. There are all sorts of things wrong with it. Very difficult to lock/relock. Seams are open at the corners of the frames inside and outside, there are two empty holes at the top/outside of the frame. Yesterday water leaked in. This was the reason we bought a new door to start with. The door itself is crooked and deviates 4 mm. The whole thing is very poorly finished. In 5 weeks, the seller said, it will be resolved. Now that water is leaking into our house I am very upset. What are my rights?

You must summon the contractor by registered letter (keep a copy yourself) to resolve the defects within a reasonable period. Also point out the damage that may now be caused by the poorly delivered work and state that the contractor is held liable for this. A period of 5 weeks to proceed with the repair is too long in my opinion. 2 weeks seems more reasonable to me. The contractor should resolve it within a shorter period.
